Fillers have to meet particularly strict hygienic requirements, independent of the filler design, (round, linear) or the type and form of packaging (bottle, beaker, can). To guarantee the standards are being met, equipment such as the CIP filler, external-cleaning device, the filler flushing device or the safety shower (for broken fragments) are used as required. Of particular importance is chlorine dioxide for disinfecting and sterilizing in the filling area.

The filler is certainly the most important machine in the filling area. It puts food into its correct packaging before it goes to the consumer.  A visit to any supermarket will clearly illustrate the variety of packaged products. All fluid and solid products offered in packaging have been filled in the filler area. The types of packaging include glass, PET, plastic, composite materials, drinks cartons etc. Accordingly, the fillers must have a variety of designs: every product and each package has its own requirements. All filling machines are especially demanding on the hygiene front because only clean, sterilized machines and equipment parts ensure product quality and the shelf life of the end product contained in the packaging.

Effective cleaning of the filler and subsequent disinfection as well as the use of completely sterile water for rinsing, filler cleansing and the safety shower for broken fragments (if available) are a basic requirement for hygienically, impeccable results.  In so doing, particular attention is given to the disinfectant and the active substance used for water sterilization. For both applications, the use of chlorine dioxide has been proven to be effective in different concentrations. Chlorine dioxide, when used for the disinfection of drinking water in allowable concentrations smaller than 0.2 ppm guarantees impeccable and sterile water quality. Recontamination of purified and disinfected equipment parts is therefore already minimized by the rinsing water.

Filler-CIP and  External Filler Cleaning

Pumps from the ProMinent Beta, Gamma and Sigma product ranges are used for metering cleaning agents. Pump control depends primarily on whether cleaning is being carried out in a once-through system, or whether the water will be recycled. Depending on this, either flow-proportional metering or metering based on sensor-monitored readings will be used. Disinfection is carried out with pressurized water containing chlorine dioxide in concentrations of approximately 1 ppm to 2 ppm.

Flooding the filler and the safety shower

Usually, sterile tap water is used for these tasks. In individual cases, higher concentrations are also used. Then however rinsing must be subsequently done with tap water. The use of Chlorine Dioxide here is much more effective than using hot water.

Chlorine dioxide is, without a doubt, among the best solutions for this application. The ProMinent design for central production and subsequent distribution of chlorine dioxide, in particular, has been proven. This concept allows cost-effective installations, which, in addition to supplying the filler, can also supply the rinser or the bottle washing machine with chlorine dioxide. A chlorine dioxide stock solution produced from a central Bello Zon® chlorine dioxide generator is put into a secure chemicals tank for intermediate storage and then injected with high precision like only ProMinent can.  For installation in the filling area itself, the equipment can be installed in a stainless steel housing.
